Thurmond Lake Sail & Power Squadron

As a squadron of United States Power Squadrons (USPS) serving the Thurmond Lake area of South Carolina and Georgia, our mission includes the promotion of boating safety through education, civic service and the enjoyment of boating activities and social functions among our membership.

Come for the Boating Education… stay for the Friends.

Thurmond Lake Sail and Power Squadron Charter

  • To abide by the Laws of the    United States Power Squadrons
  • To promote high standards of navigation and seamanship
  • To maintain your boat and operate it legally
  • To render assistance whenever possible
  • To conduct ones self in a manner that will add prestige, honor and respect to the United States Power Squadrons

Boating Education – One of the main goals of USPS is “boating safety through education” – we believe that an educated boater is a safer boater. USPS (TLS&PS) offers a series of courses that covers boat handling, maintenance, and navigational techniques.   Become a member (of USPS or TLS&PS) and take any or all of these courses at a discount.

America’s Boating Course covers topics that all recreational boaters must know: rules of the road, required safety equipment, navigation aids, lights and sounds, anchoring, communications afloat, adverse conditions, water sports safety, personal water craft safety and knots and lines.

Seamanship builds on America’s Boating Course and covers additional topics to enhance your knowledge and skills of boating safety, operation, marlinspike (knots and ropes), boat care and maintenance, chart reading and nautical customs and etiquette.

Piloting is the first and most basic navigation course, covering chart reading, course plotting, and basic coastal or inland navigation, including basic GPS usage.

Advanced Piloting covers more advanced coastal navigation techniques, navigation in tides and currents, and more advanced GPS usage.

Monthly dinner meetings Informative speakers are invited to most dinner meetings.

Assistance For Boaters

TLS&PS members assist the US Corp of Engineers by conducting buoy inspections on Thurmond Lake.

Our members provide safety monitoring for the 4th of July fireworks as well as any U.S. Army Corp of Engineers activity as requested.

We conduct Vessel Safety Inspections for all boaters—free of charge to insure that their boats are legal and safe to run.

The Squadron maintains a cell phone list of all TLS&PS members  that it provides to all members to use in case of emergency.

We provide Personal Flotation Devices (PFD) i. e. life preservers to anyone—member or not—upon request.  This service is invaluable since Savannah Lakes Village has many visitors who go boating.  We have PFD’s for children as well.  Contact any member for the current storage location near you or by going to the SLV Marina for our hosted PFD station.

Social Events — Fun

It’s not all about the ‘fun’… but the ‘fun’ is certainly a large part of life as well as a large part of what we want to be as a boating organization.

Our Admin. Officer, with the help of past Commanders and member volunteers, setup an array of activities, which present both challenges and good times.  Some of those activities:

Picnics – with games and contests to keep everyone as busy as they would want to be.

Golf Outings – Handicaps adjusted  for all.

Poker Run – Using navigation guides, and passengers to add to the confusion.

Scavenger Hunt – A digital hunt by boat tests your clue solving and navigational skills.

Cruise & Rendezvous – Meet up with members of other squadrons for a District fun event.

Dances – Could be part of a dinner meeting… but always a part of the Christmas gathering.

Raft-ups – Always a nice way to socialize, share good food… and take a dip in the lake on your “noodle”..
