America’s Boating Club Thurmond Lake

As a squadron of America’s Boating Club serving the Thurmond Lake area of South Carolina and Georgia, our mission includes the promotion of boating safety through education, civic service and the enjoyment of boating activities and social functions among our membership.

Come for the Boating Education… stay for the Friends.

Our Charter

  • To abide by the Laws of America’s Boating Club (aka United States Power Squadrons)
  • To promote high standards of navigation and seamanship
  • To maintain your boat and operate it legally
  • To render assistance whenever possible
  • To conduct oneself in a manner that will add prestige, honor and respect to America’s Boating Club

Boating Education – One of the main goals of USPS is “boating safety through education” – we believe that an educated boater is a safer boater. We offer a series of courses that cover boat handling, maintenance, and navigational techniques.   Become a member and take any or all of these courses at a discount.

America’s Boating Course covers topics that all recreational boaters must know: rules of the road, required safety equipment, navigation aids, lights and sounds, anchoring, communications afloat, adverse conditions, water sports safety, personal watercraft safety and knots and lines.

Boat Handling (Seamanship) builds on America’s Boating Course and covers additional topics to enhance your knowledge and skills of boating safety, operation, marlinspike (knots and ropes), boat care and maintenance, chart reading and nautical customs and etiquette.

Marine Navigation (Piloting) is the first and most basic navigation course, covering chart reading, course plotting, and basic coastal or inland navigation, including basic GPS usage.

Advanced Marine Navigation (Advanced Piloting) covers more advanced coastal navigation techniques, navigation in tides and currents, and more advanced GPS usage.

Monthly dinner meetings Informative speakers are invited to most dinner meetings.

Assistance For Boaters

We assist the US Corp of Engineers by conducting buoy inspections twice a year on Thurmond Lake.

Our members work with the Plum Branch Yacht Club & McCormick Chamber of Commerce to host the Independence Day Celebration and Boat Parade each year.

We conduct Vessel Safety Inspections for all boaters—free of charge to insure that their boats are legal and safe to run.

The Squadron maintains an internal cell phone list of all members for members to use in case of emergency.

We provide Personal Flotation Devices (PFD) i. e. life preservers to anyone—member or not—upon request.  This service is invaluable since Savannah Lakes Village has many visitors who go boating.  We have PFD’s for children as well.  Contact any member for the current storage location near you or by going to the SLV Marina for our hosted PFD station.

Social Events — Fun

It’s not all about the ‘fun’… but the ‘fun’ is certainly a large part of life as well as a large part of what we want to be as a boating organization.

Our Admin. Officer, with the help of past Commanders and member volunteers, set up an array of activities, which present both challenges and good times.  Some of those activities:

Picnics – with games and contests to keep everyone as busy as they would want to be.

Cruise & Rendezvous – Meet up with members of other squadrons for a District fun event, or lake cruises to familiarize both member and nonmembers with lake geography & layout.

Mini-cruises & Raft-ups – Always a nice way to socialize, share good food… and take a dip in the lake on your “noodle” at various locations on the lake.

How to Become a Member

Becoming a member of America’s Boating Club at Thurmond Lake is very easy. There is an introductory boating class offered for the fee of the book. This class is easy, fun, and provides knowledge for safety on the water. Taking this class is optional to become a full member. (Please check for current dues amount). Once you become a member you will receive a burgee at the first function that you attend.

If you are interested in joining us you might wish to attend a function to see what we are all about.  Contact any squadron member and they will be glad to assist you.

If you are interested in joining the club please contact Tom or Linda Williford at email: or any squadron member and they will be glad to assist.
